If I'm not around a free hotspot, I still use
the built-in 9600-baud modem in my
Cingular-AT&T phone.  It's part of the GSM
standard.  It rarely gives 9.6kbps, and
sometimes won't handshake at all -- but it
costs effectively zero since it's charged
against the voice-minute allowance which I
never exceeed.  And, for text-based e-mail,
checking when my Metro bus is coming or like
use, low speed is fine.
