[SLL] mobile data plans?

I have wasted near $3000 over past three years for my Verizon broadband 
plan that I rarely use. (Last time I used it was probably last October. I 
usually got months at a time without using it.)

So what do you use for mobile broadband? What plans? What open source 
software?

I recently saw some deal for a $200 netbook and $30 monthly plan. (I don't 
have a netbook yet so maybe that would be better than traveling with 
laptop.) But haven't researched that yet. I also have a Nokia E71 but 
haven't got it sharing internet to my laptop, so don't know if that is an 
option.
