Your problem is that you are not starting from an existing .config file. I
do not know the semantics of Ubuntu well enough to say where to get it,
but Ubuntu should have one that you can start from and use "make
oldconfig" instead of "make config". The first place I would look is in
/proc/config.gz (hint: use the zcat or zless command to read it).
