Did you find a WiFi configuration tool in either the Gnome or KDE menus? If so, what
were the results of running it?
In a terminal session, as user root, run
iwconfig
ifconfig
Then post the results back here.
A manual configuration for WEP is suggested here, although WPA is preferred.

Here's some information and some of it is specific to Ubuntu for getting and
installing the latest drivers.

Here's the Mint Wiki and Howto for WiFi

If your card doesn't have support, this shows you how to use an NDISWrapper for use
with the Windows device driver for your card. It also shows you where to find the
configuration tool in your menus.
Also, I assume you have a wired ethernet card so you were able to get all current
updates installed. That step alone might solve your problem. Just guessing and what
your situation is based on the slim amount of information you've provided.
