FYI, until recently my group at UW used Dell Precision workstations
with Linux. Now we mostly use Macs with Linux VMs unless we need
3d on Linux. You certainly pay for it though. There's usually a list at
http://linux.dell.com/desktops.shtml

Another approach I've taken in the past to save money is the
Ars Technica System Guide--find the latest edition here:
http://arstechnica.com/hardware/guides/
They usually note whether certain hardware works with Linux or not.
