[SLL] Who builds Linux systems locally?

Linux has such flexibility that your machine choice depends upon your
objective. I run multiple Linux and a few systems that have the
proprietary operating systems. The system being used to compose this
response is a surplus Dell Dimension 4600. The price of the box was
$25.00. An additional $55.00 was spent for more memory. Installing Ubuntu
and necessary drivers was trivial. This machine is almost never shut down.
I welcomed other "discarded" machine to use for various Linux related
activities. The discarded machines are used for everything from SAMBA to
Linux related instrumentation. I built a few machines. The built machines
were quite large.

If your current hardware is functioning; Discarding the machine is not
recommended. Keep the machine and add a KVM switch. This will give your a
backup and machine for performing Linux experiments. Sharing data and
hardware between machines is very rewarding.

Although you mention desktop, another consideration would be one of the
netbook machines. Target has a Linux notebook for around $250 or $300.
Although I heard that the keyboard could be larger, the machine seems as if
its' use would be a joy.

Good luck as you check the almost unlimited possibilities.

Regards,

Jerry
