There's clonezilla and stuff [1].

I'm a fan of preseeding network installs + configuration management
over images. It's more complicated and more work up front, but scales
better. It's also more self-documenting that the usual Microsoft Word
document listing most of what was done to an image before it was
mastered, so one can create another one upon the next OS release.
