[SLL] wifi with Ubuntu

Here's an update on the wifi status:

I found this posting:

I installed linux-backports-modules-hardy-generic and rebooted.

This brought up a nice little wireless icon in the Panel, and I was
able to connect to my wireless modem, even with WPA2!

But 5 minutes later, my connection slowed to a crawl.  I reattached to
my wired connection and attempted to disable wireless, and I lost the
little appicon in the Gnome Panel.  I've rebooted and can't get it
back, so far.

At least I do see the WiFi LED lighting up now, so I know I'm partway
there.
