[SLL] Problems with Hardy Heron desktop

OK, I'm drifting away from Slackware (since 0.92) and working with Ubuntu.
I did an upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 and for the most part everything is
fine...

...except my desktop is not as I left it from 7.10.  I cannot add launchers
to the desktop but can to the panel.   My "Desktop" directory contains the
"launcher" file after I try to add them, but they aren't visible.  I can run
the apps just fine however.

Ideas?
