It depends what the users really want. We were shocked to learn after
asking questions that it was mainly blogging functionality which I
assumed "everyone knew" you can get for free.

Another possibility would be CMS type functionality--the complexity
continuum I've heard is Plone (most complex/most functionality), Drupal,
Joomla, Wordpress (simplest/least functionality).

If it's document management Alfresco is very strong--and complex.
KnowledgeTree has some nice features and is simpler.

The only reason to use Sharepoint would be very strong centralized
Active Directory and Exchange support. The current big version,
MOSS 2007, is almost usable within that environment, but still a big
waste of time and money IMHO. There is an online demo at
