I'm very curious about what you turn up and what other people have
experienced. I unknowingly used Sharepoint about a year ago (it
was set up by a third party as a portal for communications between
the company I'm working for and that third party) and the UI was
horrible. I thought it was some crappy home-grown solution until
I came across some built-in documentation that spilled the beans.
So personally, I want to avoid having to use Sharepoint, and I
think that a business would want to investigate more functional
alternatives regardless of the degree to which it is interested in
freedom.
Alfresco seemed to be an obvious choice for an alternative. You
can get a demonstration set up quite easily by using a
pre-installed VMware image. After doing so, I did not find it to
be drop-dead simple to get moving on as an end-user, and I didn't
get much further into it.
This is the first I've heard of Mindquarry.
