FTTP (eg FIOS) which is both fast and cheap is available in very few areas.
Beyond that, you typically have broadband via cable and DSL. I have
never seen either of those technologies offer more than a T1's worth
of upload speed, at least not around here. That's what makes T1 still
relevant.
And once you get in semi-rural areas, T1 makes even more sense.
