Yeah, I've had that problem too.

I've got a few scripts that help out in this situation:

       whichx: shows you what X display you're using (and
               if it's functional)
  getxdisplay: find an X display that's functional and
               output the DISPLAY and related variables.
	       Looks through the environment of processes
	       (x-session-manager, gnome-screensaver, etc)
	       to find suitable displays.  Will find
	       local, ssh, and nx displays.

          rex: alias to import variables from getxdisplay
         renx: alias to import variables from getxdisplay -nx
       resshx: alias to import variables from getxdisplay -sshx

I'll see if I can pretty these up and post them.
