Thanks for all the comments regarding our Firefox printer problem.
What follows was the solution used.

BTW - IEEE SPECTRUM has an excellent article regarding The Firefox
Kid, Blake Ross and the development of Firefox. He did the work at
age fifteen. What I found fascinating was his perception of the
browser problem. In my opinion this perception was much more
important than the nuances of the code. The title and date of the
article is THE FIREFOX KID BLAKE ROSS HELPED THUMP MICROSOFT IN THE
BROWSER WARS. NOW HE'S GOT HIS SIGHTS ON MYSPACE. - IEEE Spectrum,
November 2006

-----------------------------------------Brother's solution to Firefox
Win XP printer problem-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously this has diverted from my original question. I've stepped
back to a week-ago backup, and all is fine. I do recall a recent XP
"update", plus I may have installed a couple other updates over the
past week. Once I restore to a quiescent state, and backup on demand,
I'll start sequentially adding updates to see if the issue resurfaces.

BTW, Opera and Sea Monkey worked fine, out of the box. It was just FF
that was barfing.

Also, BTW, I too am addicted to AdBlock!
