The biggest powersuck has largely gone the way of the dodo: Monster CRTs.
My 20-inch Mitsubishi got stuffed in storage summer before last, replaced by
a 17-inch Viewsonic LCD that draws (well, flips it over and RTFL's) ok, it's
rated for 1.2 amps so, assuming 80% duty cycle, probably 120 watts, probably
1/3 or maybe even 1/4 of what the old glass behemoth did. And they
powersave automagically.
'course, then again, this only applies if you're not running one of those
monster NVIDIA or ATI cards that need their own auxiliary power just to run
the fan to try to keep it cool... that's the reason we need 4- and 500-watt
power supplies these days, just to drive the bloody GPU (which if it was the
right chipset, you could download Linux across the AGP bus... :)
