[SLL] Desktop Resolution/Ubuntu 7.10

I'm not certain how to ask this as I've just "graduated" from command-line
to an "X" desktop environment.  

When I log in as myself I wind up with a screen resolution for 1024x768 but
when I log in as "root" I get 1600x1200 which is what I want.  Where are
these being picked up?  I would really like to use the 1600x1200 and others
I have defined via Modeline statements in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.  The video
adapter and monitor support 1600x1200.  xvidtune as my personal login won't
let me switch to the 1600x1200.  I'm guessing there's a preference in my
home directory but I can find the magic.
