I have an LJ 6L that grabs lots of sheets from the stack of blanks. Manual  
feeding of single sheets works fine. At least in the 6L, there are kits of  
replacement parts that one can install. There's even a step-by-step  
procedure (many steps, though), online, with tiny images. The procedure  
needs some mechanical ability, and I suspect that the explanatory text  
doesn't warn about retaining rings that can fly away to places unknown.  
Parts kits seem to cost around $10-$20. Googling should help.

Afaik, the 6L is a development of a basic design that started with the 4L,  
so they should have some similarities.

Problem seems to be what's called the separator pad, which might be  
something like cork and rubber. Apparently, it starts to become slippery;  
in any event, it seems to be a part of printers that fails early.
