It need not be a speaker. An LED will work just as well, such as the HDD 
activity LED on the new case.

I suspect there's a power issue. That's a lot of hardware, and I know there 
used to be a custom power lead on the motherboard for some Intel processor 
boards (a four-conductor plug, as I recall.)
