The board should be able to do *some* kind of POST without the video card.
You'll want the built-in speaker attached to get the diagnostic beeps, as
that's the only feedback you'll generally get running the unit headless.
Many boards should be able to do some kind of POST without any peripherals
attached (no memory, no CPU, no disks, no video, nada). But you'll need to
check the user manual for specifics. ASUS publishes relatively decent
information on their boards.
Have you mentioned whether the LED power indicator on the main board comes
on at all?
