Thanks for the suggestion. I forgot about that option. My wife uses 
claws-mail (and before that sylpheed then sylpheed-claws). It has vcard -- 
but it only shows three fields: name, email address, and remarks. I will 
see if claws-mail supports the other fields (like phone number and mailing 
addresses). As that will be useful for her since she already uses address 
book for contacts (email only currently).

I found her system has csv2vcard. It is a simple perl script and clearly 
shows me the formats. If I don't find a converter I can write one based on 
it.

That's what I thought.

Now that you reminded me of "vcard", I went back to freshmeat and found 
many converters and also some web-based address book programs. I don't 
want web-based. I found one more program:
