[SLL] linux friendly cell phone?

Anyone have suggestions, preferably hands-on) on what cell phone to 
choose that is likely to be recognized and Just Work with linux 
(kubuntu)? Looks like I am going to be limited to Verizon current 
offerings.

I'd like to be able to access/edit/backup the phone's phone book, as 
well as photos taken by the phone, and perhaps other data stored in 
the phone.

(I am currently evaluating a Motorola W490 (from T-Mobile), and it is 
not seen by the PC. Otherwise, nice phone, good customer service, 
attractive pricing - but doesn't work in a couple locations that I 
require service)
