[SLL] Anybody have any idea of what I will typically break by initializing /tmp at bootup?

If you are clearing it yourself, you do need to be careful at what point
you are clearing it. It will need to be very early in the boot process,
otherwise you will see breakage.

If you are using a common /tmp and seeing problems on bootup it may be
that some apps are checking for existing files/sockets/etc. in there.
I'd consider this to be a broken program if that is the case.
