[SLL] Anybody have any idea of what I will typically break by initializing /tmp at bootup?

I noticed once I stopped using a common /tmp area I was able to get all
my parallel installs of various Ubuntus to work. But I wonder what
typically gets kept over there? It seems to me, given the original
intent, that /tmp should be able to be initialized at boot without
breaking things if the distro is working reasonably...???
