As long as you don't obscure the lettering, I wouldn't think they'd give you
a problem.  I remember for years they sold tiger paw stickers just the right
size to put between the numbers and letters of South Carolina plates... 

I've got a rather well-worn Linux-fish on my trunk lid... I've also seen the
little oval European-customs-style stickers that say LNX... IIRC both can be
had in a certain novelty shop whose name and exact location escape me, but
it's in Fremont (the Center of the Universe, i.e. the Seattle neighborhood,
not the one in California)...
