  Thanks Rob and everyone,

Very interestingly it appears we have a Fedora 5/7 reading from
Windows XPsp2 socket issue but ONLY when this XML data is being pumped
out, it can read "Mary Had a Little Lamb" over and over until the
   cows come home.

THe serving machine runs Windows XPsp2 pumping our simulated data
in XML format on a particular port (I don't know what program is
pumping out the data). Yes we tried different port numbers.

Mac/Debian/Fedora6/RHEL4/Fedora 5 under VMWARE on RHEL4, are all
perfectly happy with it but Fedora 5 and 7 freeze up after a few
   seconds.

Fedora 5/7 is perfectly happy to read the same data coming from
some other OS via and nc redirection through a Mac or Debian box!

Many were so kind as to contact me and ran tests so we now know
it isn't because of some peculiarity at UW or APL but something
   more intrinsic and maybe subtle.
