FWIW, I've never toasted a computer part with a permanent magnet of any sort
before. Although I was a little concerned when I took apart a computer for
the first time - the unshielded PC speaker was mounted right up against the
hard drive. And it did take me a while to degauss a monitor (which had no
builtin degaussing coil) once.
Floppy disks, maybe, but you can make those unreadable by staring at them
the wrong way.
For fun: find two hard disk magnets that are still attached to each other
(so there's a slot between them where the hard drive seek head would
normally go), find an old floppy disk with a metal shield, take some
scissors and cut a piece of the shield to fit the slot, and drop it through.
