[SLL] Linux training

Jeremy moved to Texas, north of Fort Worth, some time ago -- alas.
Michael, North Seattle CC has had good classes -- a series of 3, but you
just missed the boat, as the instructor retired at the end of last quarter.
Prospects for the future are murky. If you contacted the Dean of IT,
Patricia Cheadle, to inquire, that might also encourage her to believe that
there is a demand (she has a Business background and is not overly
conversant with the details of IT that was a responsibility foisted on her
in order to save the cost of an IT Dean.

To compound the misery, you also just missed a class given by Tim Maher,
local expert in Perl and such. These classes are excellent; I can attest
from personal experience. There is a utilities class coming up in August:
http://www.teachmeperl.com/consultix/sched.html#UNIX_Linux_Fun
Depending on your guy's level of expertise, you might also find that having
Tim hold his hand for awhile would be a good investment.
Edmonds Community College has had classes for a long time (note that
whenever you see "UNIX", the class is overwhelmingly likely to actually be
taught on Linux systems

I note that there is no instructor listed, which is a caveat, that I would
enquire into. Since this class is a "1", I assume that there is at least
one more level offered; there used to be.
There is a group that tries to act like a user group, but is apparently
really a commercial operation. It does Novell (i.e. SuSE) training that I
cannot vouch for -- or not. You didn't mention the distro you are using.

Green River Community College also has a class in the Fall. The instructor
I know of has been around for a long time, but it isn't A Carter, as listed.
Unfortunately, they appear to supply class schedule information only as a
PDF of the entire catalog:
http://www.greenriver.edu/ClassSchedule/
Of course, GRCC is way down in Auburn; you also didn't say where you are
located.
Bellevue has had a class, but I don't see it now. Their Continuing Ed
Division has offered UNIX (but I bet it's Linux) classes, with none
scheduled at the moment. Here is the link:
http://at-campus.net/bcc2/ems/course/course.aspx?C=3442&pc=5&mc=97&sc=451
You could also try the other Community and Technical Colleges in the area,
such as Cascadia, Lake Washington TC, Renton TC, even Everett and Highline
CC's, Bates and Clover Park CC's in Tacoma -- even UW Tacoma, depending on
where your business or your employee's home is located.
Shoreline Community College's Extended Learning operation offers an Online
Course in LP1 Level certification. There is no Fall schedule posted yet,
but since these courses typically interface with a contracted pro, it's
probably the same every quarter.
http://www.shoreline.edu/ce/Summer%202007/Linux.html
South Seattle Community College offers what appears to be the same course;
now I'm not sure whether the live human contact is local, or whether it's
all farmed out to the Gatlin organization -- maybe to Bombay :-(
http://www.gatlineducation.com/southced/network.htm
These classes are relatively expensive, as the so-called Extended Learning
Branches of the CC's are purely business operations with no state subsidy,
so they typically run 3-4X the cost of a "regular" credit CC course. The
Extended Learning
You might also check with the commercial training outfits such as NetDesk,
Horizon, whatever; I haven't kept track of which ones have survived. They
are probably even more expensive, and I have heard mixed reviews of
instructor quality. It would be good to see if one could sit in on a class
or two by the applicable instructor before signing-up for the whole shot.
As always, the critical thing is the instructor. In the CC system at least,
I have never been denied the request to sit in for a couple of classes
before deciding to enroll or not, to scope both the level and the
presentation. Of course, if the class is at capacity, that may freeze you
out, though there is a provision for instructors to accept "overloads" --
doesn't work well if the capacity is limited by the available workstations,
and that may not be relevant if you can bring a laptop and also access their
network via wireless. I don't think you will find these classes operating
at capacity though.
Actually, my biggest fear is that most of these classes may be too
elementary for your guy; or that they won't get up to his level until far
into the class sessions.
Done. Good luck.
