Sounds like a switch to Debian or Ubuntu is in order.
Let's see, I've done Woody to Sarge, Woody to Breezy, Breezy to Dapper, and
Sarge to Dapper, without too much trouble. Maybe a few minor issues along
the way, but it never ever scribbled on my partition table.
But, yeah, that's where I learned about making /home a separate partition,
wherein I could back up /etc, then nuke'n'pave the root partition across an
RPMish upgrade. Not that I don't still do it in Deb or Ubuntu; it's just
good practice... but rarely is apt-get upgrade to be feared. (Although
Dapper to Edgy is one I *do* fear; I'd rather wait for Feisty to clear the X
server borkage... but on the gripping hand I don't *really* have to upgrade
Dapper until 2009, so... :)
