We're happy with Bacula in our situation. We use it, controlled from
one machine each location, to back up machines in our two locations.
As Jesse said, initial setup is detail-oriented editing of config
files. We have some support scripts that let us know what is going on.
I get an email report of each backup action--I use Apple's Mail
program's "smart folders" to gather those (Subject starts with
"Bacula" and ends with "OK") into a folder--a glance then tells me
that the right number (currently 45) of backups ran overnight.
The most frequent glitch we see is Apache refusing to quit on one old
(in Red Hat version terms) machine prior to one of the backup sessions.
However, this is all Linux. I can't speak to Bacula's ability to
back up Windows or Mac.
(I am not the person who set up the system, nor the primary person
who deals with problems when they do come up.)
Bacula was a definite "win" compared with what came before here.
