Given that OLPC is an opensource project, I'm sure the project would

Perhaps it's bogus in the hands of an adult linux geek, however in the
hands of a child extra knobs and dials are nothing more than
confusing.  The software should just work and do as it is intended.
Anything less is a bug and should be fixed.  The ideal that everything
should have n+ ways to be configured and operate is just a disaster for
usability.

I won't argue that the hardware is better than the software.  Oddly
enough hardware is easier to get right.  Also, hardware doesn't get
lost in translation much from a young child to an adult, but software
certainly can.
