You're going to have to start looking at integration with the window
manager to do that.  Window managers are the ones that deal with what
gets focus and what doesn't when windows are spawned.  Each WM acts
differently.

Fun, isn't it?  Wouldn't it be so much easier to just program for one
graphical environment, or one small set of hardware?  Ever wonder why
Apple stuff can look and work so well?  Choice is great, but at the
same time, choice can be one mother effer of a drawback.
