Roughly around 2007-12-22 10:08 -0800, Mr.Scrooge extemporized:

I can't speak to the sansa specifically. However I've got a player
that is very finicky about what bitrate it accepts on music files.
Presumably if you're using the windows software with which it comes,
it will modify the mp3 to be playable when you copy it in. A bit
of googling found the acceptable bitrate parameters, so I've just
made sure to convert within the limits it'll take.
(My situation: iriver, using ogg, as converted from flac lossless
files, so reconverting from the flacs are not an issue.)
