[SLL] Bootable CD

I am having an issue with an Ubuntu live CD (Gutsy) not wanting to be
boot to.  I had this issue with a prior install and ended up
installing from thumb drive.  I have also tried other live CDs and
none of them seem to work.  I was wondering if anyone has had a
similar issue?  My computer is an Asus z96j laptop.  The CD drive
seems to be read but doesn't spin up at all when selected to boot
from.  I'm nearly at the point of re-flashing my BIOS to see if
perhaps something in the ROM got fsked.  Anyway, pre-thanks for any
help.
