I went the opposite way and purchased a very inexpensive Dell server
with 4 processors and 4 gb of ram off of ebay. It sits on 4
cinderblocks, weighs 75 lbs, heats my basement (I have electric heat
anyways), and when I work in my office I wear earplugs AND noise
reducing headphones. The act of putting in the noiseblockers somehow
puts me into a Zen "work-mode".

It's not a solution for everyone, but I am running Ubuntu server with
vmware server(s), and the solution is very approachable economically.
(less than $300). Even in the summer with no AC or fan, I did not find
heat to be an issue from this single server.
