Jesse, you're correct.

Nicholas' MUA used the the References header.
It looks like gmail is indeed too dumb to use it (or the In-Reply-To)
header, and displays threads based only on topic.

Nicholas, I apologize, you did absolutely nothing wrong at all in
re-specifying the subject line. It's my gmail that sucks.
