I keep setting the MAC address out of habit.  It works, so why mess  
about.  (Cablespeed, Millennium Digital Media, Port Ludlow, so has  
nothing to do with Comcast process.)  The MAC address I use belongs  
to a defunct IBM laptop.

I've kept my dynamic IP intact across some router reboots, and across  
our pair of extended power outages during "that time" last year, and  
some shorter ones (we have lots of YAPOs here, many short enough that  
the UPS powering the network gear keeps it going.

If I lose the IP, I'll perhaps experiment with removing the MAC  
address cloning in the router.
