Sounds like there is no response from identd on the FTP client machine.
Make sure that machine responds (somehow...the truth or a lie or the truth
encrypted) and that the firewall doesn't keep that response from getting
out. The identd daemon is the source of the "john" in the last prompt line
ftp> open ftp.livingston.com
Connected to bast.livingston.com.
220 bast FTP server () ready.
