[SLL] Multitech modem problem

I'm trying to get a Multitech MT5600ZDX external modem (56K v.90
FAX/Data) going on a system with a fresh RedHat 5.2 install.  The
modem works in Minicom, but will not dial out when trying to establish
a ppp connection.  The logs show that it hangs when the initialization
string (ATZ) is sent to the modem.  The TR light comes on but the
modem never responds with the expected 'OK.'  As a test I connected a
USR 28.8K Sportster to the system and it works fine in both Minicom
and for ppp connects.

With the Multitech I tried using the initialization string for ppp
that Minicom uses but that made no difference.  Does anyone have
experience using this particular modem?  Any suggestions of other
things to try?
